Ken Garner Workers Escape Serious Injury From Flash Fire posted August 9, 2007 Some employees at Ken Garner Manufacturing at 1201 E. 28th St. narrowly escaped serious injury Thursday morning when their cutting torch sparked a flash fire. The incident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. when workers were using a cutting torch on some metal. Workers told firefighters on the scene that they had a "burn back" through the supply lines to the oxygen and acetylene tanks. Battalion Chief Mack Moore said what exactly happened isn't clear, but it appears that the oxygen supply line somehow ruptured and ignited. The workers described it as an explosion, but Chief Moore said it was probably more of a flash fire, rather than an explosion, since the supply tanks were not involved. There was no fire when the first firefighters arrived on the scene. No serious injuries were reported. One worker complained of "ringing ears" and was treated on the scene by paramedics with Hamilton County EMS. That individual declined to be transported to a hospital for observation. The flash fire caused relatively little damage to the plant. |
