Between the Bridges Festival Is This Weekend
by Wendy King
posted August 9, 2007

The heat wave that has gripped the Tennessee Valley in recent days won’t prevent skateboarders, wake boarders and area bands from invading the Riverfront this weekend for the first ever Between the Bridges Festival.

Three-day wristbands are $22 and one-day tickets are $15, which can be purchased at the main entrance gate on Chestnut Street. Tickets purchased online can only be picked up at the Will Call window, which is also located at the main gate.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga through an endowment established by the Joseph Grubbs Memorial Foundation. Grubbs, who was the bassist for the popular local band Up with the Joneses, died one year ago from injuries sustained following a 70-foot fall.

Twenty one bands are scheduled to perform on the Riverfront this weekend beginning with Infinite Orange at 3pm Friday and Up with the Joneses concluding the event Sunday evening with a 7 p.m. concert.

The JGMF and the Chattanooga Wakeboard Clinic in cooperation with Friends of the Festival are sponsoring the amateur sanctioned event, which is expected to attract skateboard and wakeboard competitors from throughout the Southeast.

After a 2 p.m. free skate on Friday for all of the skateboard competitors, round one events in the intermediate and advanced divisions will begin with the finals slated on Saturday.

The free skate finals will begin at 8 a.m. followed by the Beginners Division contest and continuing with the Intermediate and Advanced finals. The skateboarding events will conclude with the Best Trick contest scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.

On Friday from 6 p.m. until 9 the wake boarders will participate in a Rail Jam on the Tennessee River. The round one events start at 8 a.m. Saturday with competitions in the Groms and Intermediate divisions followed later in the morning and early afternoon with the preliminaries in Advanced and Outlaw.

Sunday’s schedule starts at 8 a.m. with rounds one and two in the Women’s Division. After the women compete, round two continues in the Groms, Intermediate and Advanced. The grand finale will begin Sunday at 6 p.m. with the finals in the Outlaw Division.

Attendees are permitted to bring chairs, blankets and popup tents, but outside food and beverages will be prohibited.
