Puzzling Bumper Stickers
posted August 10, 2007

Sometimes I don't know whether to laugh or cry at some of the bumper stickers I see.

The other day I was walking on Frazier Avenue and saw a sticker that said, "Fight corporate globalism, buy locally."

Now I have no problem with someone who feels that way even though I feel that free trade leads to prosperity for all countries. However, when I looked at the car the sticker was on, it was a Volvo!

Volvo is a Swedish company that was bought out by an American company(Ford) and has no manufacturing plants in the U.S. So how in the world can you encourage people to buy locally and fight corporate globalism and drive a Volvo?

Today I was driving up Barton Avenue and saw a pick-up truck with a sticker that said, "You can't be pro-life and pro-war." So I assume this person was comparing an unborn fetus to Al-Queda and Saddam Hussein? And I personally don't know one person who is "pro-war."

I do know people who are pro doing whatever might improve the security of our country. And this is from the perspective of a Pro-choice Republican with Libertarian leanings who doesn't know if going into Iraq was the correct decision.
