Duplex Burns On Greenwood Avenue
posted September 4, 2007

Red Cross volunteers helped relocate two families following an early morning fire on Tuesday.

The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 1:07 a.m. and responded to a duplex fire at 612 N. Greenwood Ave. with four fire companies.

Battalion Chief Ben Biggs said smoke was visible from the rear of the structure when the first firefighters arrived. There were initial reports that children were still inside, but Chief Biggs said everyone got out safely.

Fire officials said they learned later that a small child did suffer second- and third-degree burns to her right arm.

The child was taken home, but later was taken to Children's Hospital, where she was treated and released.

The firefighters acted quickly, containing the fire to the bedroom where it started.

The cause of the fire appeared to be electrical in nature. The loss was estimated at around $10,000.
