Opportunities Available Through United Way's Volunteer Center posted September 4, 2007 Chattanooga Area Urban League is seeking a volunteer receptionist and greeter to assist staff with answering phones, greeting walk-in customers and directing customers to the staff and departments that they may need. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 5:00 p.m., 20 hours per week. Hours are flexible based on your schedule. Chattanooga Community Kitchen needs volunteers to do clerical work and make phone calls for our Fast Day campaign. This will involve calling churches and businesses that have been past participants to find out the amount of material they need for the campaign. Arts and Education Council of Chattanooga The Arts and Education Council needs volunteers to help in the following capacities: School Brochures- AEC has a great line up of school literary programs for the 2007-2008 school year. We need to let teachers know about these events by distributing our color brochure to all Hamilton County schools as soon as possible. We have packets of brochures for each school that includes one per classroom teacher. Culture Fest- AEC Culture Fest 2007 is Saturday, Sept. 29. We need your help to make it a success! Volunteers are needed to help set up in the morning, work in the AEC booth and in the coke wagon, help in the ArtQuest kids tent, and clean up when the event is over. Shifts are two hours long and all volunteers will receive a 2007 Culture Fest t-shirt. Thompson Children’s Hospital Foundation Bids for Kids fundraiser auction is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29 beginning at 7 p.m. at Porsche of Chattanooga. We are in need of volunteers this year to help with set up the day of the event as well as during the event. Set up will begin Saturday morning and lunch will be provided for you. If you wish to volunteer during the actual event, you should plan to arrive around 5:30 or 6:00. Northwest Georgia Family Crisis Center, Inc. has several volunteer opportunities available at this time. Volunteers are needed for tutoring, mentoring, childcare, shelter maintenance, office work and many others. Crabtree Farms The Summer at Crabtree has been a busy time, but with limited resources it is a very demanding time as well. We are looking primarily for volunteer groups, but could definitely use individual volunteers as well. Projects include: -Fall Plant Sale preparation - washing pots, transplanting seedlings, starting seeds in the Greenhouse, -weeding and watering crops -Fall Crop maintenance - planting new beds, weeding crops such as strawberries, thornless blackberries and blueberries We are here Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 5:00, and Saturday mornings from 8:30 to 12:00, but are flexible to other's schedules. Volunteers are needed to team-teach basic financial skills to Hamilton County 11th graders. The Chattanooga Nature Center is having its annual Festival of the Jack O’Lanterns on Oct. 20. Partnership for Families Children and Adults The Partnership for Families, Children and Adults seeks an intern to assist the Development department in day-to-day fundraising and marketing activities. The intern will be considered an integral part of the department, and as such, his/her ideas and input will be valued. Different aspects of the work may include correspondence to funders; mailings; planning for events; identifying and researching prospective donors; etc. This is an excellent opportunity to gain professional fundraising experience in an established nonprofit organization. Previous administrative experience, interest in development activities, and commitment to social causes desirable. Major in marketing, public relations, communications or other liberal arts field preferred. Lookout Mountain Land Trust Tuesday/Wednesday Weekly Work Days at John Wilson Park: Please join us for a weekly time of weeding, planting and other various park upkeep tasks at John C. On Saturday, September 22, evening volunteers are needed to help with activities during “Creatures of the Canyon,” a night of storytelling and hiking that will be led by Moriah Salter and Jim Pfitzer at the Pot Point Cabin and Loop Trail. Gorge Fest- On Saturday, Oct. 20, more than 150 volunteers are needed to help with Tennessee River Gorge Trust's 2nd Annual Gorge Fest. This event is an educational and family-friendly event that will take place on Baylor's campus and William's Island. We will educate local residents about the amazing significance of the Tennessee River Gorge through a variety of hands-on and recreational activities including pontoon rides to William's Island, hayrides, science experiments, and many other opportunities. Don't forget the chance to see the river from a hot air balloon. Volunteers can participate individually or as a group (with scouts, schools, etc) and will be needed to assist with children's activities, set-up, decorating, grilling hot dogs, handing out lunch, and much, much more. For more information, please contact Sarah. Chattanooga Cares Cut Up for Life, benefiting Chattanooga CARES, will be held Saturday, Sept. 8 from 11 until 5. We will need volunteers from 8 AM until 6 PM. Volunteers will assist with setting up, breaking down, assisting different participating salons, managing the food and beverage area, and various odd jobs.
