Volunteer Opportunities Available Through United Way
posted September 26, 2007

Creative Discovery Museum-
Volunteers play a huge role in making the Kids Like You, Kids Like Me exhibit a success by working with school groups and giving them a great hands-on learning experience. As an exhibit volunteer, you will demonstrate how life may differ for a child with a disability. Volunteers assist as children learn similarities and differences through the use of simulation equipment such as frosted goggles to impair vision. No experience is necessary, as full training is provided. Corporate and community groups are welcome to volunteer. Training can even be conducted at your organization. To sign up, call the volunteer manager at 423-756-2738.

United Way’s Day of Caring-
On Thursday, Oct. 4, hundreds of volunteers from local businesses and communities will partner with United Way of Greater Chattanooga and area leaders to serve our community through work on community-based projects. You are invited to join us in this effort to help us make a lasting change for those who really need it! More than 250 volunteers participated in 2006 and we would love to exceed that number in 2007. Day of Caring is just one more way United Way impacts what matters in our community. If you as an individual, company or group would like to get involved, please contact Toya Cobb, volunteer manager at 423-752-0316 or toyacobb@uwchatt.org.

·On Saturday, Oct. 6, from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., join us for the 19th Annual River Rescue! TRGT staff and volunteers will have the opportunity to join hundreds of other volunteers who will be working around the entire Greater Chattanooga area to carry out River Rescue. This is a family-friendly event that brings our community together to clean-up the Tennessee River. We will be focusing our efforts on the Tennessee River Gorge and are helping Zone Coordinator, Mike Wells, with volunteer recruitment. We will meet at Suck Creek Boat Ramp at 9:00 a.m. on Oct. 6 and will spread out on the river in boats and along the shore by foot to collect trash. Bags and gloves will be provided. T-shirts are available on a first come, first served basis only. Get there early if you want to get your shirt. Details are in the works, so contact Sarah for more information. Individuals and groups are welcome to participate.
·Oct. 20 is GORGE FEST. On Saturday, October 20, more than 150 volunteers are needed to help with the Tennessee River Gorge Trust's 2nd Annual Gorge Fest. This event is an educational and family-friendly event that will take place on Baylor's campus and William's Island. We will entertain and educate local residents about the amazing significance of the Tennessee River Gorge through a variety of hands-on and recreational activities including pontoon rides to William's Island, hayrides, geocaching, science experiments, and kayaking & canoeing. There will also be live music, inflatable events for children, animals from the Chattanooga Zoo, local craftsmen, storytellers, and the chance to see the river from a hot air balloon.

Volunteers can participate individually or as a group (with scouts, schools, etc) and will be needed to assist with children's activities, Williams Island events, set-up, decorating, grilling hot dogs, handing out lunch, and much, much more. Volunteer shifts will run approximately three hours and that will leave plenty of time for you to enjoy the festivities yourself.
