Chatt-A-Birdin' by Riverwalk Birding Club posted October 18, 2007 It's mid-October and the Hummingbirds are about all gone south from the Chattanooga area, we don't have many different species, most of the Hummingbirds in and around Chattanooga, if fact east of the Mississippi, are the Ruby-Throated species with a Rufous Hummingbird sometimes. But that's not the case in Arizona as you will see by these wonderful photo's by Richard Schier, the Magnificant Hummingbird is a beauty that we will never see here, but thanks to Richard we can enjoy it's beauty. Dear Family and Friends, Of all the amazing bird species we saw while in Southeast Arizona, the MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRD certainly has to rank near the very top. At Beatty's in Miller Canyon, there was a constant swarm of various Hummer species, but every once in a while, a HUGE Hummer would appear among the others. ![]() The majority of Hummingbird species fall within the 3 to 4 inch size range, but THIS fellow .... Well .... He was simply Magnificent !!!! He dwarfed the others ..... Every shade of green imaginable ..... A true Show Stopper ..... Here is the male as he began to turn more towards the camera lens .... Look at his neck color now ..... ![]() Magnificent Hummingbirds are geographically restricted to the Chiricahua, Huachuca, Santa Rita, Santa Catalina, White, and Pinaleno Mountains of Arizona ...... also a few locations across the border into New Mexico and Mexico. ![]() Their preferred habitat is mixed oak-pine woodlands at 4,500 - 8,000 feet, and occasionally riparian forest in canyon bottoms. ![]() ![]() The Magnificent Hummingbird male finally turned into the sun at just the right angle ... ![]() Simply incredible ! Then a female appeared ........... ![]() Isn't she lovely ? Have a Magnificent Day !!!!!! |
