Mocs Wrestling Makes School History, No. 10 In Nation
UTC Hosts No. 8 Missouri On Sunday
posted December 13, 2007

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team moved into the nation’s top 10 this week for the first time in school history.

In the latest top 25 poll released by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and InterMatWrestle.com, the Mocs, 5-0 in dual matches and 21-1 over the last two seasons, improved from No. 11 to No. 10. It is UTC’s highest ranking in the program’s Division I era.

“We are getting closer to our goal of being No. 1 in the nation,” UTC Head Coach Chris Bono said. “The guys are excited, but we all realize that this means nothing until the NCAA Championships. What it does indicate is that programs around the nation are taking notice of our program, how hard we are working and how difficult a team we are to wrestle.”

The Mocs have tied the men’s golf team for the school’s highest Division I national ranking among all sports. The men’s golf team is currently ranked No. 10 by GolfWeek.

Individuals ranked by NWCA/InterMat are Javier Maldonado, Lloyd Rogers and Matt Koz. Maldonado checks in at No. 10 at 125 pounds, Rogers is ranked 19th at 174, and Koz is the No. 10-ranked wrestler in the nation at 197 pounds.

UTC puts its new ranking on the line Sunday when it hosts No. 8 Missouri. The match is set for 1 p.m. at Maclellan Gym.
