Glenwood Fire Leaves 5 People Homeless posted January 15, 2008 A fire in Glenwood on Monday night left five people homeless. Chattanooga firefighters responded to the house fire at 1900 Ivy St. around 11:30 p.m. The fire was at a two-story house that had been converted into a rooming house. One of the tenants, Wayne Graham, heard a smoke alarm in one of the unoccupied rooms on the second floor. Mr. Graham alerted the other tenants and then ran to a neighbor's house to call 9-1-1. All five tenants escaped the fire uninjured. As the firefighters arrived on the scene, Battalion Chief Ben Biggs said flames were visible from windows on the second floor of the house. The firefighters quickly entered through the front door and managed to contain the fire damage to the second floor. There was smoke and water damage to the rest of the building. The loss was estimated at around $30,000. Volunteers with the American Red Cross were called in to provide assistance to the victims. Capt. Lesley Morgan with the Fire Investigation Division said the cause of the fire appears to be accidental, but what exactly sparked the blaze remains undetermined. |
