EPB Chooses Goldman Sachs For Big Bond Issue posted January 18, 2008 EPB has chosen the investment firm of Goldman Sachs to handle a huge bond issue for the city-owned utility to get in the cable TV business. EPB officials said earlier they plan to spend $210 million for a fiberoptic network that would allow the agency to offer cable TV. EPB is already in the phone and Internet business. Greg Eaves, EPB finance director, said he expects to be ready by the board's February meeting to move forward on the bond issue. He said the exact amount of the issue had not been decided. Meanwhile, the board held a closed-door meeting with attorney Carlos Smith Friday morning regarding a lawsuit filed by the state cable TV group trying to stop EPB from going into that business. A Nashville chancellor recently declined to dismiss the complaint that is being handled in Nashville. Attending the board meeting - but not the attorney/client meeting - were a Comcast representative and attorney. Mr. Eaves said Goldman Sachs had weathered the problems faced by the financial industry over subprime loans and had maneuvered its holdings "so they are making money off it." The board was given a demonstration of the new mobile workforce system that went into place Dec. 3. Officials said they can pinpoint exact locations of service vehicles and that helps in distributing the daily workload and taking care of customer orders much more efficiently. The system gives a driver step by step directions to the next stop and helps plan out the best route for the jobs assigned. It has already greatly cut down on overtime costs, officials said. |
