A Lookout Valley couple is homeless after fire broke out in their mobile home Thursday morning.
Kennie Woolwine said he and his wife Nancy were asleep in bed when they woke to the sound of popping and cracking around 9 a.m.
When he looked around his bedroom, he said he saw flames shooting out an electrical wall outlet.
Mr. Woolwine helped his wife, who is physically disabled, out of the trailer, and he also got his five pet dogs and cats out as well. He then called 9-1-1.
The Chattanooga Fire Department responded to 3343 Bromley Lane with four fire companies. Captain Charles Patterson with Engine 20 said flames were visible out a rear bedroom window when his firefighters arrived on the scene. Capt. Patterson said the firefighters quickly made their way inside and got the fire out in less than five minutes.
No injuries were reported. The fire damage was contained to the bedroom, but part of the exterior wall burned up, and there was smoke and heat damage to the rest of the trailer.
The couple did not have renter's insurance and needed a place to stay for the night. Volunteers with the American Red Cross, who were already helping out fire victims from an early morning fire in Sale Creek, also responded to the fire to provide the couple with an alternate place to stay, as well as assistance with food, clothing and medicine.
Lt. Anthony Moore with the fire investigation division said the cause of the fire appears to be accidental, most likely from an electrical malfunction. The loss was estimated at $10,000.
