Baylor, Father Ryan Advance in D-II State Duals
McCallie Falls To Christian Brothers

posted February 1, 2008

While, the top two seeds - Baylor and Father Ryan - advanced to the semis as expected, the unexpected happened in the D-II Invitational in the first day of the TSSAA D-II state wrestling duals at Father Ryan in Nashville.

In the inaugural Invitational tourney for small enrollment private schools, St.Andrews-Sewanee gave up 30 points in forfeits (five weight classes) and still defeated Harding Academy, 39-36.

"We didn't expect this (win) in any way," said a pleased SAS coach Dan Barry after the match.

SAS 171-pounder Andy Midgett stood tall in the middle of the mat with his arm raised in victory as his 10-5 win against Harding's David Denzin clinched the team win for the Mountain Lions. SAS led 39-12 at that point, as Harding won at 189 with a pin and then received three forfeits to gain the final 24 points.

"We only brought eight guys and three pinned, three won by forfeit and Midgett with a regular decision which was incredible," said coach Barry

In the semis, SAS will face top-seed Ensworth, a 56-18 winner against BGA.

Pope John Paul II defeated St. George's, 36-22, and Briarcrest stopped Knoxville Webb, 54-24.
In D-II large schools, quarterfinal winners were Baylor and Brentwood Academy in the top half and host Father Ryan and Christian Brothers in the bottom half.

Anticipated Match: Christian Brothers defeated McCallie, 46-18, as expected. But in an upset at 112, McCallie eighth grader Michael Hooker defeated defending state champion Brian Baucke, 7-3. This gives Hooker the No. 1 seed for the traditional state tournament, with Baucke and 2007 state runner-up Alex Manley in the opposite half.

Hooker defeated Manley, 9-0, in the McCallie-Baylor dual on Jan. 25.

Chattanooga Area Shows Strength: Top-seed Bradley, along with Cleveland and Ooltewah all advanced to Saturday's semi's in the D-I AAA duals, showing the strength of Region 3 & 4. Cleveland and Ooltewah meet in one semis, while Bradley faces Independence.

100th Career Win: Pope John Paul junior co-captain Thomas Garbarino (112) recorded his 100th career win with a pin against Idris Garcia of St. George's. Garbarino is 29-7 on the season and 100-18 all-time.

Tullahoma Girl - Busy Schedule: Tullahoma 130-pounder Emily Gessler was pinned twice on Friday in matches against Greeneville and Independence, and will continue to wrestle on Saturday.

Orginally, she was scheduled to wrestle for the South Doyle co-op girls team at 11 a.m. vs. Soddy Daisy in the inaugural girls state match in the large gym. But the Tullahoma boys team also has a consolation match at 11 a.m. in the small gym. Depending on what weight the two matches start with, she could - with the necessary 45 minute rest requirement between matches (unless waved) - wrestle in both matches in one session.

The South Doyle girls team is scheduled to wrestle Science Hill at 3 p.m., while, with a win in the consolation's, Tullahoma boys would wrestle at 1 p.m. and if victorious again at 3 p.m.. Thus, another potential double match for Miss Gessler.

If Tullahoma advances to the consolation finals at 5 p.m., that could give Miss Gessler a potential sixth (one over the one day limit) match in one very long day.
