Mark Albertini said Wednesday that he has decided to withdraw from his candidacy to unseat U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander.
He said, “I want to first of all thank those of you who expressed your support for me and my candidacy. I have had great struggle in arriving at this decision because I believe in keeping my word.
"I entered this race with the belief that a veteran and a more conservative leader was needed to represent Tennessee and the U.S. in many matters that we as Americans are facing. Although I still believe this, certain events have altered the political landscape.
"My heart is very much pulled towards federal office because I sincerely believe it is there where most of our problems in America have been conceived. I knew the odds were nearly insurmountable before I entered the race, but a deep concern for our nation and a determination to stand for what I believe is right drove my ambitions.
"I have determined there are other ways I can affect change statewide and nationally through writing and other activities for the present. I am active on the blogs and maintain my own website.
"I was contacted by a state party official after my announcement and we met and discussed the political landscape and where I might fit in. After speaking with this individual and other close friends, I have determined that it is in the best interests of the Republican Party, the citizens of Tennessee and my political interests to not continue this race.
"I am, however, considering other options this year including races which provide a more viable chance for me to win the nomination for the Republican Party.
