Don't Blame Special Education Children posted February 16, 2008 Mentally and physically challenged students have a right to be educated, or do the judges wish to make a list of which children should be allowed to access public education? Are you going to start by denying access by diagnosis - bipolar children do not receive an education? The skills required to work with special education children far exceed skills possessed by a typical classroom teacher, and the criminal justice system is the least equipped to serve these children. Maybe someone needs to examine the management of the Dawn School and the qualifications of the staff. The data collected by the schools and reported to the Tennessee Department of Education does not support the unfounded statements that special education children are anywhere close to the primary source of violence in schools. Finally, no one is mentioning the high rate of crimes committed against children by authority figures in the educational system. The violence problems start with adults, because violence is a learned behavior. Allison Graham aag1049@aol.com |
