"Extreme Makeover" Planned At Chattanooga Middle School posted March 4, 2008
Allison Lebovitz and Josh McManus told the North Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday that the week-long community effort will start on Monday morning, June 23. The "Bring It Together" project is to continue through Saturday night, and there will be an open house on Sunday, June 30. Ms. Lebovitz, who was earlier involved in developing a new playground for Normal Park, said there are 25 spaces at the old brick school that are being adopted by a contractor, an interior designer, a parent, a teacher and a student. She said several large contractors have already signed up. The effort will also include sprucing up the outside of the 78-year-old school located on West Mississippi Avenue. Mr. McManus said over 300 people are expected to be working all day long each day on the project. He said volunteers are needed to help feed and entertain the crews. Jill Levine, Normal Park principal, said there have been some discussions about placing a new recreation center for North Chattanooga at the old middle school site. Robin Derryberry, chamber president, surprised the visitors by presenting a check for $3,000 toward the effort. She also said the chamber unit plans to adopt one of the classrooms.
