Readers Recommend The Big Biscuit Barn

I have received several E-mails from readers asking us about this restaurant, so we decided to drive out to Fort Oglethorpe for a Saturday morning breakfast. The Big Biscuit Barn is located at 1391 LaFayette Road, Rossville (between Rossville and Fort O).

Have you ever noticed the addresses on LaFayette Road? Rusty’s Meat Market is 1219 LaFayette Road, then suddenly the odd numbers switch to the other side of the road and The Big Biscuit Barn at 1391 is not on the same side as Rusty’s. What’s up with that?

I can say two things about this place – they have nice, big, moist, tasty biscuits and the sausage gravy is creamy and good. But - if you’re going for eggs, keep going.

When you enter, you’re at the order counter – and while you are waiting to order, you are blocking the condiments area, so people keep breaking through to get to the napkins and other necessities.

After reading the menu on the wall behind the cashier, I decided to order the Barn Breakfast Platter (eggs, gravy or grits, biscuit, potatoes and your choice of sausage, bacon or bologna for $4.29) with sausage. My thinking was if I couldn’t eat it, I could always take it with me. Since I wasn’t asked, I specified I wanted my eggs extra soft scrambled and the cashier gave me this “look” and said, “all our eggs are soft scrambled”. I knew it was not to be, as this said that the eggs are already done and you get what they give you.

Wayne ordered the same breakfast and even though he prefers over-medium, he would be getting scrambled. He also decided to order the city ham changing the price to $4.89 (you could also get polish sausage or country style steak for this price). For $5.39 you could have a choice of country ham, chicken tenderloin or a 4-ounce rib eye (4 ounces sounds like the size of a sausage patty to me).

We took a seat and waited for our paper plates to arrive. It took only a couple of minutes for delivery, and Wayne gave my eggs “the eye” as they were placed in front of me. He knew immediately it had been a while since these eggs had been at the soft stage. These were waaaaaaaaaay past soft. It reminded me of those places where they pour the eggs onto a griddle and let them cook like a pancake, flip them over and try to chop them up to resemble scrambled. There’s a reason I order soft scrambled eggs, and I really don’t appreciate someone trying to pass off over-hard eggs as soft – not even giving my order to the cook because “all our eggs are soft scrambled”.

The meat is inserted into the biscuits prior to serving, which is no problem. Wayne was surprised to see his city ham was actually two slices of lunch meat (maybe they ran out of the real thing) and the potatoes are tater tots. The taters were well done.

I ate half of the top part of my biscuit with the sausage gravy (really good gravy), the sausage, and a couple of the tater tots. The rest I shoved into my empty drink cup and brought it home for the canine crowd.

They were quite busy both inside and at the drive through (the parking lot needs some work – gravel, full of holes that were filled with water due to the rain), and I’m certain that if people are going just for the biscuits and gravy, it is a great place. The menu boasts an assortment of biscuit sandwiches featuring the breakfast meats already mentioned, as well as a Strawberry Shortcake Biscuit for $2.29. Someone sitting near us ordered one of the shortcakes and it looked delicious. That might have been a better bet for us.

Lunch includes several salads priced at $5.49 (served with garlic cheese biscuits), loaded baked potato ($5.49), hot dogs ($1.49 to $3.49), burgers ($1.49 to $3.79) and sandwiches (from $2.99 for a grilled cheese to $4.99 for homemade chicken salad). For dessert there are pies and the Barn Strawberry Shortcake. The menu states there is always a pot of beans with cornbread and onion for $2.49, soup of the day and chili (with the garlic cheese biscuits). That sounds good to me!

Next time you are in the area, you may want to stop in and check out the Big Biscuit Barn. Hours for the barn are Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM until 2:00 PM and on Saturday (serving breakfast only) from 7:00 AM until noon.
