Women’s Army Corps Training Center Walking Tour Is Saturday
posted March 14, 2008

Park Ranger Rebecca Karcher will lead a walking tour on Saturday of the site where the Third Women’s Army Corps Training Center was located during World War II. This two mile walking tour will begin at 2 p.m. at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center and last approximately two hours.

In January 1943, the United States Army established the third and largest training center for female military personnel at the Army Post in Fort Oglethorpe. Located in the northwest corner of the Chickamauga Battlefield, this complex would train 50,000 women for military service between the period of 1943 and 1945.

The Women’s Army Corps would play a critical role in the Allies World War II Europe and Pacific theater victories, and served as a catalyst for greater equality and opportunity for all women in the post war era.

Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable footwear and bring a bottle of water.

For more information, contact the National Park Service Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center at (706) 866-9241.
