Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton, whose administration has been the subject of several investigations, announced Thursday he is resigning effective July 31.
The city's first elected black mayor held the post for 16 years.
Mayor Herenton, 67, said he is considering several options, including in the field of education, the Memphis CommercialAppeal said.
