Once a year, the Walker County Partners for Educational Progress, an organization of over 200 area businesses, civic clubs, faith organizations and individuals, honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the education of children in Walker County. This year one of those special individuals was Alvin (Al) M. Hutchison, Jr., Vice President of Economic Development at Northwestern Technical College.

Mr. Hutchison, who has served on the WACOPEP Steering Committee for several years, has been instrumental in developing progressive programs and guiding the work of the organization. In recent years, he has been involved in preparations to establish Walker County as a work ready region through training, testing and certification of high school and college students.

When honored at the Annual WACOPEP Partner Recognition luncheon, Mr. Hutchison said his service to education was prompted by his desire to help people prepare for fulfilling careers and build a better quality of life for the whole community. Then he thanked and shared his recognition with others working toward the same goals including Patty Hart, Economic Development Programs Instructor at Northwestern and Walker County School Board member.

Mr. Hutchison's career spans over 35 years. After graduating from the University of Georgia, he served in the U.S. Air Force then worked in banking and the mortgage banking industry. He also owned and operated a real estate agency before beginning a career with the Chamber of Commerce that led him to Walker County.
