Brainerd Unity Group Is Connecting The Community
posted March 21, 2008

On behalf of the Brainerd Unity Group, we on the steering committee want to thank the Brainerd community for its increasing support of our goal to unify and strengthen our unique midtown neighborhood. Our organization was formed by participants of Chattanooga's Neighborhood Leadership Institute who realized that Brainerd could not thrive without a group to connect its residents, neighborhood associations, businesses and elected officials.

What began as a group of Brainerd neighbors brainstorming around a dining room table last summer has grown to a community of nearly 200 members from more than a dozen neighborhood associations as well as representatives of Brainerd's business, religious, educational and non-profit organizations.

Brainerd is characterized by many different cultures and religions. Moreover, Brainerd is represented by three city council districts as well as three county commission and school board districts. The Brainerd Unity Group is connecting our districts, celebrating our diversity and building consensus in Brainerd to work toward common goals. We cannot help but be hopeful about Brainerd's future when our standing-room-only meetings overflow with ideas to improve our community. None of this could be happening without a growing partnership between Brainerd citizens and Brainerd leadership.

In particular, we extend our deep appreciation to Rep. Joanne Favors, Sen. Andy Berke, Councilwoman Dr. Carol Berz and County Commissioner Greg Beck. These elected officials have attended Brainerd Unity Group meetings and offered support, encouragement and partnership. Scheduling conflicts have prevented Councilman Duke Franklin, Comm. John Brooks and School Board Rep. Jeffrey Wilson from attending our meetings, but they have contacted us to offer support. Additional thanks go to Beverly Johnson and the Department of Neighborhood Services, the Eastgate Police Precinct and the Eastgate Ridgeside Chamber of Commerce.

The Brainerd Unity Group Steering Committee:
Joyce Campbell, Molly Cooper, Candy Corneliussen, Bill Eiselstein, Rev. Mike Feely, Kevin Knight, Julia Morgan-Scott, Alan Richelson, Peggy Roselle, Cynthia Stanley-Cash, Donna Weeks, Velma Wilson
