Chattanooga Bach Choir Performs Handel's Carmelite Vespers posted March 21, 2008 The Chattanooga Bach Choir, under the baton of David Long, will conclude its 23d season with two performances of Handel's Carmelite Vespers on the first weekend of April. The first concert will take place on Friday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m., at the Broad Street United Methodist Church in Cleveland. Another performance is scheduled for Sunday, April 6, at 3:30 p.m. at Chattanooga's Grace Episcopal Church. The choir will welcome soprano Kristen Wiram as guest soloist. Ms. Wiram is the choral conductor at Ooltewah High School and recently performed the role of the Dew Fairy with the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Association's presentation of Hansel and Gretel. Choir soloists will include Rachael Henderson and Lonna Williams, sopranos; Martha Cartwright, alto; Robert Sauser and Adam Puryear, tenors; and Sanford Shaw, baritone. The program will feature music composed in 1707, when the 22-year-old composer traveled to Italy and, at the request of his Italian hosts and patrons, composed a variety of music for the feast day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Two choral pieces for soprano soloist and chorus, Dixit Dominus and Laudate Pueri Dominus, display the first bursts of Handel's musical genius, and Salve Regina and Haec est Regina Virginum, both written for solo soprano and included in the 1707 celebration, show the composers gifts for melody, text-painting, and writing for solo voice. Though there is no charge for the performance, a donation of $15 is suggested. Students with valid ID are welcome to attend without making a donation.
