The 2008 high school softball season could not have gotten off to a better start for coach Norma Nelson and her Lady Owls.
Ooltewah won the Soddy-Daisy Invitational last weekeed and enters play this week with an 8-0 record.
The Lady Owls won six games last weekend in the Soddy-Daisy event behind the phenomenal play of senior Holly Thomas.
Tournament scores: Ooltewah 16, Polk County 0; Ooltewah 10, Boyd-Buchanan 3; Ooltewah 5, Ravenwood 0; Ooltewah 17, Whitwell 0; Ooltewah 1, Siegel 0 (semifinal); Ooltewah 1, Goodpasture 0 (final).
In the tournament, Thomas was 4-0 with 42 strikeouts. She gave up only four hits and allowed no runs. and is 6-0 for the season.
Thomas also hit .786 for the tournament with two home runs, three doubles, a triple and game-winning hits in the semifinal and final.
"Holly has been throwing so well and hitting so well,'' Nelson said. "She is so focused with her pitching and hitting.''
Stephanie Braz won two games in the tournament, pitching a no-hitter against Whitwell.
Other hitting stars for the Lady Owls in the tournament were Kristin Whitmire (.692, triple, home run); Kaitlin Neil (.526, home run, four doubles); Tabitha Farrow (.538); and Jessica Chernak (.438, two doubles, triple).
"We really hit well in the tournament until the last two games,'' Nelson said. "But Siegel is very good and Goodpasture has won so many state champhionships.
"We just need to be more disciplined at the plate. We had 14 strikeouts and still won the championship game. It's just a matter of looking for good pitches to hit.''
