Boyd-Buchanan Launches Campaign For New Library
posted March 26, 2008

Boyd-Buchanan School on Tuesday launched an Invest in Imagination campaign at the Marriott in downtown Chattanooga.

President Lanny Witt, along with architect Patrick Bales, introduced the new plans of the library-media center, and current secondary librarian Karen Hedgecorth spoke about why the school is in need of a new library.

Officials said, "In addition to Boyd-Buchanan’s continued commitment to the development of academic, spiritual and physical potential of each student, we maintain a commitment to preserve and grow the facilities that serve our student body.

"A three-year capital campaign is planned to build a new Library-Media Center, increase transportation fleet, enhance the endowment, reduce the debt, fund new technology, and supplement sustaining funds."

Officials said the Invest in Imagination campaign will minister to students and their families in four critical, strategic ways.

Construction of a Library-Media Center
Continuing growth of our endowment
Reduction of current debt
Furnishings and maintenance for construction

The Flora Sue Boyd Library has served thousands of BBS students for nearly 40 years.

It was noted that Boyd-Buchanan School has grown to an enrollment of nearly 1,000 students and "with the advancements in technology, our current library has been stretched beyond its physical ability to greatly enrich our student’s intellectual talents."

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the academic accrediting body, has identified the Boyd-Buchanan School library as the number one need for improvement in the school's physical plant.

The plans for the new Library-Media Center will have an elementary library along with a reading corner, a well-equipped secondary library, a state-of-the-art computer center, a cutting edge media room, and a mezzanine with tutoring rooms and a resource area. Conference rooms will allow for meetings that will not disturb the quiet atmosphere in the open library. There will be ample storage space along with offices and restrooms. Additional space will allow for more resources to be used by students and staff by adding more tables, work stations, computers and print items. In all, the new building will encompass library space, conference rooms, storage, periodicals, office space, and tutoring rooms.

A full-time librarian will be devoted to the elementary wing, and the middle/high school wing will have its own dedicated librarian. Staffing will be complemented with a part-time assistant and parent volunteers serving as library aides.

A Library-Media Center is needed to accommodate the growing student body, it was stated.

This building will house the elementary, middle and high school library-media center programs with state of the art technology and will accomplish two primary goals.

Create a learning center that is the hub of the school environment and that is integral to teaching and learning by providing additional opportunities for students to focus on independent learning while giving support and encouragement to their individual talents. Boyd-Buchanan School has developed a program using information literacy as an attainable goal for our students, enabling them to find and use information, thereby encouraging life-long learning. Combining the resources and staff into one central library-media center will significantly improve this information literacy program.

Provide additional space, hours, and resources for after school studies as well as student mentoring and tutoring programs. Providing after school services in the Library-Media Center will encourage students to utilize library resources and to participate in the student tutoring program. The student tutoring program is overseen by the Academic Coordinator and ministers to students in need of academic enrichment and one-on-one instruction to maximize student understanding and achievement. The program supports the classroom teacher and provides supplemental instruction to aid students in mastering skills and concepts and to enrich his/her learning experience. The program also includes a peer-tutoring/mentoring component of high school students tutoring middle school and elementary students.
