Mocs Announce 2008 Football Schedule
Season Will Feature Traditional Powers
posted March 26, 2008

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The 2008 University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football schedule includes traditional powers from both the Football Championship Subdivision and the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The Mocs will welcome three-time NCAA Division I National Champion Appalachian State to Chattanooga’s Finley Stadium as well as six-time National Champion Georgia Southern and will travel to perennial college football powers Oklahoma and Florida State early in the season.

Chattanooga, like nearly every other NCAA Football program, will play 12 games in 2008, and the Mocs will have six home games.

“We have a well-balanced schedule,” Head Coach Rodney Allison said. “It is set up for what we were looking for, and that is a schedule that will help take this program forward. Our objectives were met.”

The Mocs, 2-9 a year ago, will alternate away and home dates. The home schedule features four Southern Conference opponents including Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, Elon and new SoCon-member Samford.

Appalachian State, 13-2 in 2007 with a victory at Michigan to open the season, visits the Mocs Nov. 8. The Mountaineers have won three straight NCAA Division I titles in Finley Stadium.

The Mocs can make it three consecutive wins over rival Georgia Southern on Oct. 4. Chattanooga posted a 45-38 overtime victory over the Eagles in Statesboro last season and was 27-26 winners at home two years ago.

Elon, 7-4 last year, heads to the Scenic City Oct. 18 and long-time rival Samford out of Birmingham, Ala., closes out the regular-season schedule Nov. 22.

“This will be a difficult schedule early,” Allison said. “Samford is a great school and a prominent school in this area. They are a perfect addition to our league. Selfishly, it will be nice to have a SoCon opponent closer for us to play.”

The home slate also includes Cumberland University Sept. 6 in the home opener and nearby Jacksonville State of the Ohio Valley Conference Sept. 20.

Chattanooga, now in its seventh season under Allison, opens the 2008 season Aug. 30 at Oklahoma in Norman, Okla., then travels to Tallahassee, Fla., to face Florida State Sept. 13.

The Sooners finished at 11-3 in 2007, claimed the Big 12 Conference Championship and played West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl. The Seminoles went 7-6 last season and made a Music City Bowl appearance.

“These are two tradition-rich college football programs,” Rick Hart said. “This is a tremendous opportunity for our student-athletes to participate in two of the best college football atmospheres in the nation and compete against two of the top all-time football programs.

“There are not many campuses that rival Oklahoma and Florida State, and we are certainly proud to provide our football team with the chance to experience these two trips. Our hope is that many of our fans will join us in Norman and Tallahassee. We are very appreciative to each institution for working with us to schedule these games.”

Other road dates include visits to SoCon foes Furman on Sept. 27, Wofford Oct. 11, Western Carolina Nov. 1 and The Citadel Nov. 15. The Mocs will take an open date Oct. 25.

Season tickets go on sale April 16. The first three home dates are tentatively scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m., while the final three home games are tentatively set for 2 p.m.
