County officials are considering an increase in the cost charged to prisoners for their stay at the Hamilton County Jail.
Scott Schoolfield, county human services director, said the rate of $28 per day has not changed since it was established on July 24, 1985.
He is proposing a rise to $40 a day.
Mr. Schoolfield acknowledged that many inmates never pay the fee. But he said it has brought in almost $1.7 million in the last four years.
He said the average is $338,643.
Mr. Schoolfield said paying the fee is a requirement for some inmates before they can get their driver's license back.
The proposal was discussed in committee and will be brought back up later.
