County Considering Rise In Jail Fees posted March 27, 2008 County officials are considering an increase in the cost charged to prisoners for their stay at the Hamilton County Jail. Scott Schoolfield, county human services director, said the rate of $28 per day has not changed since it was established on July 24, 1985. He is proposing a rise to $40 a day. Mr. Schoolfield acknowledged that many inmates never pay the fee. But he said it has brought in almost $1.7 million in the last four years. He said the average is $338,643. Mr. Schoolfield said paying the fee is a requirement for some inmates before they can get their driver's license back. The proposal was discussed in committee and will be brought back up later. |
