Remembering The Start Of WAWL
posted March 27, 2008

I remember the day that Chattanooga State's WAWL became a radio station.

The time was the mid -80's. The gentleman who ran it was the late Bob Riley. The music was of the light rock/pop combination. The after hours format was the "Nature Sounds." One night was the sounds of a thunderstorm. One night was the sound of the meadows during spring. It was considered to be on the relaxing sounds. The call letters was "WCSO- The Voice of Chattanooga State."

A lot of the students who studied at WSCO-WAWL went on to work in higher branches of the radio. The students were taught different varieties of the radio business. They had radio shifts through the day. It gave them hands on experience to learn the trade well.

I was a student at Chattanooga State at the time of WAWL's birth. I had several friends who went through their training at the radio station. I was an art major with a music minor. I did many art projects for the radio station. I even designed the first "Totally Off the WALL" T-shirt.

Losing the WAWL will be a huge injustice. It is a huge part of the history of Chattanooga State. We need to save it from going down.
