Problems With Emissions Testing - And Response posted March 29, 2008 I recently took my 2006 Toyota Camry to the facility in Hixson for testing and it failed due to a "defective gas cap." I was told to have the gas cap replaced and the car would have to be re-tested. After buying a new gas cap to replace the original, I returned, and it also failed their test. I suggested this was strange since the cap was new. I overheard a discussion between two technicians noting that they had recently had several gas caps to fail inspections. The technician then obtained another adapter to re-test the new cap, and this time it passed. Then I suggested to him that there must be a problem with the equipment that they were using. I asked that they re-test my original gas cap and was told that it could not be done because the vehicle had now passed, and if I wanted them to test my original gas cap I would have to pay an additional $10. This is a very unfair way to treat citizens and places the emphasis upon raising revenue without any regard for the stated purpose of detecting "safety" problems. We citizens have no recourse in cases like this. The technicians doing the testing are the final authority regardless of their training or expertise. Bobby Newsom Soddy Daisy * * * I read with much interest the experience Bobby Newsom reported in the Chattanooga.com. The emission testing centers are supervised from Nashville. A copy of the article has been sent to state authorities in hopes that this injustice will be corrected by those in authority. Bill Knowles County Clerk |
