Carrie Daugherty Was Ambushed, Viciously Attacked, Witnesses Say
posted March 27, 2008

A witness said Notre Dame graduate Carrie Daugherty was jumped as soon as she stepped out of her car, then was viciously beaten, it was testified at a preliminary hearing for her accused killer, the Knoxville News-Sentinel reported.

A witness saw the March 19 killing in an older section of Knoxville from about a block away.

The murder case against Micah Johnson, 21, was sent to the Grand Jury. It was testified that Johnson appeared to be contemplating a jump from a bridge into Loudoun Lake when he was arrested.

He was found with the 24-year-old victim's cell phone and $80 - amount the amount she had earned in tips that night at Barley’s restaurant.

The witness saw the man drag the victim away from the car toward her residence on E. Columbia Ave., then drag her back to the vehicle, where the body was found.

He apparently beat her with a brick and a shovel and also put a rope around her neck, it was testified. The brick was found broken into two pieces.

The victim was a former University of Tennessee student, and Johnson had been kicked out for an attack on a male student, who suffered serious injuries.

No mention was made of an entry in the victim's diary in which she said she was afraid Johnson might kill her or of the motive for the attack.

Funeral services for Ms. Daughtery were held Monday morning.
