Chief Wes Snyder: Larceny Is #1 Cleveland Crime
by Wes Snyder, Cleveland Chief of Police
posted March 28, 2008

Larceny is undoubtedly the number one crime in the city of Cleveland, Tn. Larceny is the legal term for the unlawful taking away of another’s property without his or her consent and with the intention of depriving him or her of it.

Larceny includes crimes such as shoplifting, pocket-picking, purse-snatching, theft from motor vehicles, theft of auto parts and accessories, bicycle theft, etc.

159 larcenies (or thefts) were reported inside the city limits by the end of February this year.

During 2007 CPD investigated 1,799 larcenies; 1,548 in 2006 and 1,771 during 2005. Over a three-year period we are averaging 4.67 per day.

Protect your belongings. Make an inventory, mark your valuables then videotape or photograph them, and finally, check your insurance coverage - it may need to be updated.

Shoplifting is a crime that ranks high in Cleveland. It’s a Class A misdemeanor crime punishable by a maximum of 11 months and 29 days in the county jail or a fine not to exceed $2,500. That’s a high price to pay for stealing articles valued less at than $500.

Theft from Buildings is also a crime that ranks high in Cleveland. In a large percentage of these crimes, forced entry is not an issue due to the fact that many victims leave their doors and windows unlocked! Always ensure that entry points to buildings and storage sheds are secured. Deadbolt locks are best for use on all exterior doors. If you have sliding glass doors, use pin locks to keep them from sliding or being pried up and out of the track. You may also want to consider the installation of supplemental locks on all windows - just remember to allow easy removal from the inside for fire safety purposes.
