Woman Shot After Neighbors Argue Over Electricity
posted April 2, 2008

A dispute between neighbors over theft of electrical power resulted in a shooting that sent a woman to the hospital on Wednesday.

Police said 23-year-old Krystal Giles was shot in the hip around 2 p.m. after her neighbor, John Thomas Shipley, opened fire on her in front of her E. 18th Street home.

Ms. Giles and Shipley had an argument over Shipley's accusation that she was stealing electrical power. At some point during the argument Shipley went into his house, got a gun and came out shooting, police said.

Police responded to the scene and tried to take Shipley into custody, but encountered resistance when he refused police directives to come out and surrender. Police were eventually able to get him into custody, but only after having to taser Shipley in efforts to subdue him.

Shipley faces two counts of aggravated assault for the shooting.

Ms. Giles' friend, Denise Hendrix, was also on the porch when Shipley opened fire. Ms. Hendrix, however, was not hit.

Ms. Giles was treated at a local hospital and released.
