Several Exciting & High Energy Sports Events Offer Athletics For Everyone posted April 14, 2008 Whether being a participant or a spectator, several exciting sports and athletics competitions are coming to the city’s recreation facilities that will engage a variety of ages and skill levels! Southern States Athletic Conference Tennis Tournament to be held at the City’s Champions Club Tennis Complex April 18 & 19, 2008 The South's top men's and women's college tennis teams will compete for "best in the region" awards at the ‘Southern States Athletic Conference’ being held at the Champion's Club Tennis Complex, 3400 Lupton Drive, on Friday and Saturday, April 18th and 19th. "Close to 300 players and coaches as well as folks who support the teams will be here", explains George Starr, Sports Information Director at Lee University. Colleges and universities participating in the tournament include: Auburn University-Auburn, AL, Berry College-Mount Berry, GA, Emanuel College-Franklin Springs, GA, Lee University-Cleveland, TN, Reinhardt College-Walesa, GA and Shorter College-Rome, GA. Mr. Starr shares that Auburn University's team is ranked number one for both its men’s and women’s teams by the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) and are defending champs. U.S. Jr. Olympic Skills Competition Champion's Club Tennis Complex Manager Orlando Lourenco enthuses, "Having this conference at Champion's Club is a great opportunity for the many high school players to see what college play and competition is like...especially kids on the cusp of deciding whether or not to pursue college tennis." "This will give them the chance to see the best players and high energy competition." The public is welcome and, tennis lovers are encouraged, to come out and watch. Junior Olympics Basketball Skills Competition The City’s Parks and Recreation Sports Division will host the annual Jr. Olympics Basketball Skills Competition on Saturday, April 26th for boys and girls (who’ll compete separately) in the following age groups 8-9, 10-11, & 12-13. Registration and sign-in is at 10:00 a.m. and the competition starts at 11:00 a.m. at the Brainerd Recreation Center (1010 N. Moore Road). “This competition challenges participants to score as many points as possible by making baskets from designated shooting areas and the free throw line in 45 seconds”, explains Sports Coordinator Richard West. From this event, winners advance to the Regional Competition in Knoxville, TN and go on to the National Finals held at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. This event is free and open to all youth ages 8—13. For more information call: Richard West at 643-6055. 2008 Tennessee Senior Olympic Games District Competition in Chattanooga May 7 – 10, 2008 The Tennessee Senior Olympics in partnership with the City of Chattanooga Parks and Recreation Department, the Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors, and Blue Cross Blue Shield will host this year’s Chattanooga District Senior Olympics May 7 – 10, 2008 at athletic venues throughout the city. The opening ceremony is on Wednesday, May 7th at UTC’s McClelland Gym at 1:00 p.m. Athletes as well as sports and fitness enthusiasts ages 50 and up are invited to participate and register now. Events include swimming, basketball free throw, bowling, volleyball, track and field, tennis, billiards, horseshoes, table tennis, softball throw, softball, ballroom dancing, 5K run, cycling, golf, power walk, shuffleboard, badminton, basketball 3 on 3, weightlifting, and racquetball. Ballroom dancing will also return as a competitive event. The top four finalists in each event at the district level will advance to the state competition, July 18-24, 2008, in Williamson County, Tenn. Top finalists from the state competition will qualify for the 2009 Summer National Senior Games slated for August 2009 in San Francisco. The deadline for District Senior Olympics registration is April 15, 2008.
