posted April 17, 2008

Women who were rounded up in this week's immigration raid at the local Pilgrim's Pride plant in Chattanooga are being housed in Nashville and the men at a site in Alabama.

The women were taken to the Davidson County Jail, which has a federal contract, the Nashville Tennessean reported.

The men were taken to Lumpkin, Ala.

About 100 people were picked up in the Chattanooga roundup.

Humanitarian workers said the children involved are being housed with family and friends.

La Paz de Dios is working with Chattanooga community members to meet the humanitarian needs resulting from the roundup, Stacy Johnson, who heads the group, said.

She said La Paz is the leading agency
serving the area's sizable Latino population.

Ms. Johnson stated, "At this time, we are ensuring that our families most immediate and basic needs are met. Additionally, we will refer families to the proper agencies regarding legal assistance.

"Those in need of assistance should contact La Paz de Dios (Sylvia Rangel) at 320-3636 or 624-8414.

"Individuals seeking to offer donations can also contact La Paz or send donations (c/o La Paz de Dios) to Holston Methodist Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 3306, Chattanooga, TN. 37404."
