Stuart Street House Heavily Damaged In Afternoon Fire
posted April 24, 2008

An afternoon house fire at 2311 Stuart St. caused substantial damage to one house and damage to the siding on the house next door.

A resident in the house next door, Myron Riggins, said he was inside playing a video game shortly after 3 p.m. when he heard a "popping and cracking sound." When he stepped out the front door to investigate, he said the whole front porch on the house next door was engulfed in flames.

Mr. Riggins called 911 and the Chattanooga Fire Department responded with four fire companies.

Battalion Chief Ben Biggs said the fire appears to have spread from the porch into the walls and then up into the attic. Chief Biggs said the firefighters did a good job of getting the fire under control, but the damage to the house was substantial.

The intense heat from the flames also melted the siding on the house next door occupied by Mr. Riggins. No injuries were reported.

Capt. Lesley Morgan with the Fire Investigation Division will be trying to determine what started the blaze. An estimate on the dollar loss was not yet available.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross were called to the scene to provide assistance to the victim. Chattanooga police, Hamilton County EMS and Chattanooga-Hamilton County Rescue also provided assistance on the scene.
