Relay For Life Raises Awareness And Money For Cancer Research posted May 5, 2008 The Relay for Life for East Hamilton County will be held at Camp Jordan beginning this Friday evening, at 6 p.m. This annual event is an overnight fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Volunteers will be on the track from 6 p.m. on Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday morning to symbolize the cancer journey. One local survivor said, "The purpose behind doing it over night is you start out in the light, go through the dark and you see the sun rising and it's supposed to be the path through having cancer. Everything's fine, then you hit that dark area of all the problems (with going through treatment), then you kind of go into the dawn, which is supposed to be the sign for a cure." The survivor wishes to remain anonymous, but his words summarize the spirit of relay. This year's theme is "Around the World" and the 21 teams must choose a theme for their campsite based on this global theme. Cancer survivors, their families and the public who support them have a great time. Games, food and entertainment begin at 7 p.m., and continue until 6 a.m. East Ridge participants include East Ridge Kiwanis, East Ridge High School, Notre Dame High School, Ridgedale Baptist Middle School, Frawley Baptist Church, East Ridge Education Committee, East Ridge United Methodist Church, University Oncology & Hematology Associates, and Covista Communications. The event's title sponsor is Chattanooga Group. Other sponsors are Sam's Club, Brainerd Wal-Mart, US XPress. The entire community is encouraged to attend the event. Items will be on sale at each team's booth to raise money for a cure. There will be special activities for children all night long - so families are encouraged to attend. There will be food, fun, live music, arts and crafts, activities and fellowship. |
