Beck Says Prisoners Could Be Housed In Old School posted May 6, 2008 Democratic Sheriff candidate Greg Beck said Tuesday he would consider finding alternative housing to help alleviate overcrowding at the County Jail. Mr. Beck, who is also a County Commission member, said he would consider putting prisoners in an old school. Jim Hammond, Republican candidate, defended his proposal to move quickly toward getting the sheriff's department accredited. He said it should only cost about $5,000. Mr. Beck said he understood the initial cost would be $15,000 and there would be an annual $5,000 expense. Tim Akins and Jim Winters, Independent contenders, also took part in a forum at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre sponsored by the North Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Akins cited his experience in the sheriff's office and said a younger person is needed to lead the office. He said he would get out into the community and wanted community members to get to know their officers. Mr. Winters cited his business experience and said he was the only detective in East Ridge for three years and was also active with the rescue squad. He and Mr. Akins said politics should not play a role in the sheriff's office. Mr. Winters said he felt he had more to offer than the existing candidates, so he launched his second try at public office. |
