He was a kind and loving husband and father and was always ready to help anyone in need. He was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church.
He served in the Korean War with Company B, 151st Engineers Combat Battalion in 1950. He retired from DuPont after 38 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Nell Proctor Matthews, baby daughter, Brenda Matthews and brother, Proctor Matthews.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Doris Parker Matthews; four sons, Terry, Gerald and wife Lisa, Mark and Tim Matthews; two granddaughters, Brandy (Wayne) Henderson, Jessica Matthews; two grandsons, Marty and Jacob Matthews; two sisters, Doris M. Matthews, Rena (Howard) Anderson; brother, Rev. Jerry T. Matthews (Carol) of North Augusta, South Carolina; sister-in-law, Lois York Matthews of Birmingham, Al.; several nieces, nephews and three great-nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Rev. Bert Jones and Bill Harvey officiating. Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Randy Anderson, Jim Nolen, Justin Nolen, Rodney Smith, Ryan Smith and Chad Smith serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.
