Many cancer patients in the Tennessee Valley and North Georgia are receiving care from Parkridge Medical Center’s newly approved and commended oncology program. The Sarah Cannon Cancer Center at Parkridge Medical Center has received eight out of nine possible commendations from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer.
SCCC met or exceeded CoC benchmarks in several areas such as community engagement, innovative treatments (including offering the option of participation in clinical trials), community outreach (offering screening opportunities, etc.), and continuing education for staff.
Parkridge’s oncology program was also recognized for proper submission of information to a cancer registry that collects data and offers lifelong patient follow-up.
“For a facility to receive all commendations available except one is exceptional for an initial review,” said Darrell Moore, president/chief executive officer of Parkridge Medical Center, Inc. “This only occurs when a facility performs above compliance for all standard areas reviewed by the Commission.”
Only one in four cancer treatment programs in the US and Puerto Rico is approved by the CoC, yet these CoC approved facilities diagnose and/or treat 80 percent of newly diagnosed cancer patients each year. In order to maintain approval, facilities must undergo an on-site review every three years.
