Baylor relied on strong pitching and the long ball to defeat visiting McCallie, 5-1, tonight and win its second consecutive TSSAA D-II East District baseball championship.

Starter Chase Riemer (6-0) struck out five and scattered four McCallie hits to gain his second win in six days. He tossed a 2-hit shutout (10-0) against Webb on Friday.

Andy Shuford's team-leading 12th home run (and 50th RBI) - a solo shot in the third inning - proved to be the winning run to give Baylor a 2-0 advantage. The Red Raiders (28-5) increased the lead to 3-0 on a Zeth Stone round tripper into the trees beyond the right centerfield fence in the fourth.

Riemer worked out of jam in the top of the fourth as McCallie (25-9) had runners on second and third with one out. Riemer struck out Taylor Smith on a 3-2 pitch and then covered first for the third out on a fine fielding play by first baseman Tyler Massey.

"Chase pitched a magnificent game tonight and our defense was very good behind him," said Baylor coach Gene Etter who recorded his 725th career win (725-303).

McCallie cut the lead to 3-1 in the fifth on a two-out, RBI single by James Campbell, driving in John Brock who had reached on an error.

Baylor scored two insurance runs in the fifth on Isaac Edmonds’ two-out, two-run single scoring Riemer (who had led off the inning with a single) and Massey.

"Chase pitched very well and Baylor had some good defensive plays which were keys to the win," said McCallie coach Chris Richardson. "I told our guys that I am proud of them and we were in the same boat last year (losing in the District finals) and then reached the state finals."

Plays of the Day: Baylor - 4th inning ... runners on second and third, two out; Stuart Voges’ ground ball to first, handcuffed Massey who was able to recover and throw to Riemer covering first for the third out ... McCallie - 1st inning ... runners on first and second, no out ... shortstop James Campbell made a diving stop of Andy Shuford’s ground ball and then flipped to second to force Tyler Massey for the first out as Dylan Craig advanced to third (and later scored)... 6th inning (back-to-back plays)... centerfielder Guerin Higgins made a diving catch of Will Stansell’s fly ball in right center ... third baseman Andy Brown made a diving stop to his left of Nic Baker’s ground ball and then got to his feet and threw Baker out at first.
