Rebecca J. Craven
Rebecca Jayne Craven, 76, of Chattanooga, died on Wednesday, May7, 2008 in a local health care facility.

Ms. Craven was born in Chattanooga in 1931. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.C Craven, she graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1949 and the University of Chattanooga in 1954 where she received a Bachelor of Music degree. The following year, she received her Master of Arts in Library Science from George Peabody College.

She spent two years in Germany working for the Army Special Services. Upon returning to the U.S., she spent a short time at the Library of Congress as an intern until accepting a position with the Cincinnati Public Library in the Audio Visual Department.

During her tenure of over 30 years with the CPL, she became Head Librarian in the Audio –Visual Department and later Director of the entire Arts and Music Division.

She was an accomplished musician playing both piano and the viola. During her last two years at UC, she performed with CSO. In Cincinnati, she performed with the Cincinnati Community Orchestra and was very active playing chamber music in various ensembles in the area.

When she returned to Chattanooga in 1992, she played with the Senior Neighbors Orchestra and several ensembles. She was an avid cat lover and always had her "children" around her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Craven, sister, Regina Craven Clarke, and brother, Roy C. Craven Jr.

She is survived by her brother, Jay M. Craven (Kathleen), Nephews, Dr. Jamie Craven, Curtis Craven, Fred Clarke Nieces, Resha Oliphant, Hillary Craven, and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Reverend J. Walter R. Thomas officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Human Educational Society, 212 North Highland Park Avenue, 37404, Pet Placement Center, 5975 Dayton Blvd., or the McKamey Animal Care and Adoption Center, 4500 N. Access Road, P.O. Box 1028, Hixson, TN 37343.

Her family will receive friends on Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. until service time at the North Chapel of the Chattanooga Funeral Home.
