Deep Six Half-Baked Rumors About "McBrien Prison"
posted May 9, 2008

Much conversation is being made concerning a new school in the city of East Ridge - most of it erroneous.

A statement was made by one of the sheriff candidates that possibly vacant school buildings could be converted into jails. Next, all kinds of rumors started about McBrien School being a selection for a jail.

So let's go back to the facts. First, no decision has been made to do anything about a new school or McBrien School. At three local meetings Dr. Scales and Gary Waters have asked for citizen input. School Board Chairman Kenny Smith has also attended these meetings answering parental concerns, stating no decisions have been made.

All have been forthright in giving information about costs for new construction and for repairs and upgrades. To bring McBrien School up to standards, the cost will be $3 million to $5 million more than a replacement of McBrien, according to the studies done by the engineers.

If McBrien School is to be replaced, that school and all the property would revert back to the city of East Ridge. The school board and the professionals have a much better insight and wisdom than we, so let's wait for a decision before any half-baked rumors are circulated that do no good and only cause emotional outrage.
