Tennessee Education Association Announces Annual Award Recipients

Tennessee Education Association President Earl Wiman presented Distinguished Educator awards on Friday, among several other awards given to Tennessee educators and education supporters at TEA’s annual awards luncheon. The luncheon is held at TEA headquarters in Nashville on the opening day of the Representative Assembly that began Friday at 5 p.m. at the Nashville Convention Center.

The Tennessee Book Company, a longtime supporter of the Distinguished Educator Awards Program, will provide gift certificates to all DEAP winners. TEA will host a special gala event for all award winners on Friday.

The 2007-08 Distinguished Classroom Teachers are Sharon K. Anderson (Putnam County), Connie Vaughn Bishop (McMinn County), Debbie W. Campbell (Hardin County), Loretha Knapp (Memphis), Kristy Roop (Knox County), Christian L. Sawyer (Metropolitan Nashville), Linda “Link” Raulston Sparks (Hamilton County), Nancy Wisker (Maury County), and Mac Wojcik (Shelby County).

Cathy Beaty (Memphis) is the 2007-08 Distinguished Education Support Professional. Distinguished Administrator Awards go to Dr. Angela Holloway (Shelby County), Elisa Cooper Luna (Knox County), and Julia Nicholson (Clarksville-Montgomery County). This year’s Distinguished Higher Education Faculty Member is Dr. Linda Arms Gilbert (Middle Tennessee State University).

E. Harper Johnson Human Relations Awards were presented to Sylvia C. Dance, nominated by the Hamilton County Education Association, in the Educator Category and to Stanley Blair, nominated by the Athens Education Association, in the Layperson Category. Rosemary Winters, special education teacher from Memphis, received the Susan B. Anthony Award for her work in support of programs and achievements for women and girls.

President Wiman also announced the winners of the 2007-08 Don Sahli-Kathy Woodall Scholarships. A $1,000 Sons and Daughters scholarship goes to Jennifer Valentine, University of Tennessee Knoxville, daughter of Tammy Valentine of the Sevier County Education Association. The $1,000 Future Teachers of America scholarship goes to Jackie Warren, Coffee County High School.

Nicholas Hathcock, Lambuth University, and Michael Hartman, University of Tennessee Knoxville, president of Student TEA, received $1,000 STEA scholarships. STEA also awarded $500 scholarships to Sarah Johnson, Union University, and Debra Oglesby, Northeast State Technical Community College.

President Wiman will present the 2008 School Bell Awards for excellence in media coverage of education and TEA’s Friend of Education Awards at Friday evening’s Representative Assembly.

Winning a TEA School Bell Award this year for outstanding coverage by an individual reporter is Amy Wallace, The Leaf Chronicle of Clarksville. For outstanding coverage by a large daily newspaper, Alice Dollar of the Knoxville News-Sentinel receives the award.

TEA’s 2008 Friend of Education Awards go to Franklin Cates of Shelby County, in the individual category, and to Women United in Community Service from Athens, Tn., in the organization category.
