Boyd-Buchanan Has Penny-War Fundraiser For Nigerian Mission
posted May 9, 2008

Boyd-Buchanan’s middle school students participated in a “Penny War” to raise money for the non-profit organization “Right Steps,” a human rescue mission for women and children operating in southern Nigeria.

Pennies, silver coins, cash and checks were collected from each grade to be donated to help the orphanage and school in Nigeria. Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students competed to see who could get the most pennies; however, dollar bills, checks, and silver coins counted against each teams’ total points. For example, if an 8th grade student donated $5 to the 6th grade penny jar it would actually count as 5,000 points taken away from the 6th grade’s total penny collection. This strategy is played from each team to encourage donations of all types.

The BBS middle school students raised a total of $2,305.

On Tuesday, May 6, Boyd-Buchanan middle school students presented a check to Dr. Chi Ekwenye, the Director of a holistic mission effort in Obuzor, Nigeria. She is a native of this area and has been involved in this work since 1997. In 2006 she received the “Outstanding Christian Service Award” from Pepperdine University for her selfless work and sacrifice on the mission field. Dr. Ekwenye has three adopted children of her own as well as helping look after 50 other children who are residents of Susana Homes, a residential facility in Nigera that is one of the “Right Steps” projects. This facility receives children from birth to teens, rescuing them from a situation of being orphaned, destitution, or some state of homelessness.

The money that Boyd-Buchanan middle school students raised will go to help repair a school provided for these children. Specifically the money may go to roof repairs, tuition for needy students at the school, and/or perhaps T-shirts for the students to wear.
