Chattanooga’s burgeoning nuclear power industry is the subject of a major piece in the April 24 editions of Greenwire, one of the country’s leading information sources for daily coverage of environmental and energy policy, politics and markets.
Titled “Nuclear Power: Chattanooga Hitches Its Economy to an Atomic Choo Choo,” the 1,700-word piece says the city is undergoing a “nuclear renaissance” with investments by two leading players in the nuclear power industry – Alstom and Westinghouse Electric Co.
“If there’s any nuclear power revival, this city is going to play a role,” Greenwire reporter Dan Cusick writes. “With its nexus of major interstate highways and navigation access to the Tennessee, Ohio and Mississippi river systems, east Tennessee offers logistical advantages for a revitalized nuclear power section that few other areas can match.”
Greenwire’s southeast correspondent based in Atlanta, Cusick was one of three out-of-town journalists who visited Chattanooga recently to cover the nuclear industry and “green” businesses in the area.
Cusick recalls the city’s historical links with the nuclear industry through “atomic pioneer” TVA and Combustion Engineering, a manufacturer of nuclear reactors and a major employer in the 1970s.
“Now the city is going back to the future,” Cusick says. “It is poised for a second boom as a research, development and procurement hub for the nuclear power industry.”
