T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital Hosts Second Annual Safe & Sound Kids Fair
posted May 12, 2008

Safe & Sound, a childhood injury prevention service of Children’s Hospital, will host the second annual Kids Fair this Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. along the Chattanooga Riverfront, in front of Blue Plate Diner.

Children, from toddlers to teens, will have the opportunity to participate in exciting activities while learning the importance of health and safety issues such as fire safety, water safety, drug prevention and much more. Parents will be informed on the latest in child safety and health information from organizations and businesses that serve area families.

Local organizations will be on hand to provide safety tips through interactive exhibits. The Hamilton County Sherriff’s Department will give kids the chance to use “fatal-vision” goggles, which simulate what it is like to operate a vehicle while intoxicated. Also, the Chattanooga Fire Department will let participants tour the “smokehouse”, a mobile fire safety trailer. The Chattanooga Lookouts will demonstrate safety at the ballpark and Chattanooga Skate Park will teach proper skate safety techniques.

As a special feature this year, Safe Kids Worldwide is re-introducing Gear-Up Games. The purpose of the Gear-Up Games is to stimulate a change in behavior in an effort to decrease injuries and to increase the proper use of safety equipment.

The Gear-Up Games include:
-“Protect your Brain”-how to protect your brain during wheeled sports activities such as biking, skateboarding, scooter riding, rollerblading. This activity will demonstrate the affects of traumatic brain injury.
-“In a boat, stay afloat”- this game is designed to illustrate which water devices will actually keep you afloat and which ones will not.
-“In and around cars safety race”- motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death and injury to our children. This game illustrates the proper use of vehicle safety devices.

“Each year, nationwide, more than 3.5 million children ages 14 and under are treated for sports related injuries,” said Becky Campbell, Safe & Sound program coordinator. “Roughly half of these injuries are sustained in solo activities — especially biking, skating and skateboarding, which is why we want to encourage parents and children to properly gear up for safety.”

The free event will feature more than 40 local agencies, including:
Chattanooga Zoo
Erlanger Health System Trauma Department- ATV safety
YMCA- pool safety
Tennessee Highway Patrol
Chattanooga Times Free Press
Operation Lifesaver

The Safe and Sound Kids Fair is made possible by a grant from T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital Foundation.
