UTC's Dr. Barbara Ray Receives Funding For Summer Institutes
posted May 12, 2008

Dr. Barbara Ray, UC Foundation Professor in the Teacher Preparation Academy at UTC, has received $155,267 from the Tennessee Department of Education to conduct two summer institutes for individuals pursuing special education licensure.

These institutes seek to meet the needs of Tennessee's exceptional children by helping teachers upgrade their knowledge and skills.

The Special Education Institute for Teachers will assist Tennessee special education teachers currently on temporary licenses, waivers, and permits to complete licensure requirements.

Specifically designed summer courses, taught by UTC faculty members, will focus on content that fulfills State knowledge and skill requirements for teachers. Tuition assistance will be available for existing Tennessee teachers and current students who agree to teach in Tennessee schools.

The Early Childhood Special Education Institute for Teachers targets Tennessee educators of exceptional children who are seeking licensure with endorsement in early childhood special education.

Individual programs of study will be developed for each participant and financial assistance will be available to cover tuition, books, and materials.
