Atlanta Braves Split With Pittsburgh Pirates Monday posted May 12, 2008
Tim Hudson had a solid pitching performance and Brian McCann hit a three-run homer. After stranding 15 runners in the first game, the Braves' offense released their frustrations against John Van Benschoten, who was making his first Major League start of the season. Hudson received his first lead of the day with Mark Kotsay's fourth-inning, two-run double and then gained plenty of breathing room during a four-run fifth inning that was highlighted by McCann's three-run shot. On his way to winning his third straight start, Hudson limited the Pirates to one run and two hits over seven innings. The lone run he surrendered was unearned because of an error charged to Greg Norton, who was playing first base in place of Mark Teixeira, who was forced to exit the first game with back spasms. With the nightcap victory, the Braves snapped a seven-game road losing streak and won for just the fifth time in 19 road games this year. Kotsay enjoyed a three-hit game that also included a seventh-inning RBI double. Chipper Jones, who had an RBI single ahead of McCann's homer, had four hits in eight at-bats during the twin bill and is still leading the Majors with a .406 batting average. * * * * * Atlanta opens a series against the Phillies Tuesday night. __________ Adapted from MLB.com
