Hixson Advances To Region 3-AA Title Game As Millwood Pitches 2-Hitter

posted May 12, 2008

Hixson and Chattanooga Christian will meet for the fourth time this season on Wednesday night for the Region 3-AA high school fastpitch softball championship.

Hixson defeated Meigs County, 2-1, on Monday at Hixson in a region semifinal and Chattanooga Christian won at Sweetwater, 2-0.

Hixson coach Janet Tate said the time for Wednesday’s region title game at Hixson will be determined on Tuesday.

“We’re going to try to look at the weather and decide what time to play,’’ Tate said Monday night. “Every time I look at it, it keeps changing.’’

Hixson has won all three games this year against Chattanooga Christian.

“But they are very explosive,’’ Tate said. “We’ll see. Both teams know the other one very well. I’m just glad we’ll be playing at home. We had a really nice crowd tonight, and that was sweet.’’

The region champion will play host to a state sectional on Friday and the runner-up will travel to the Nashville area.

CCS 2 SWEETWATER 0: Junior Jennifer Long pitched a no-hitter and had three strikeouts in the Lady Chargers' 2-0 win at Sweetwater.

CCS scored both its runs in the first inning.

Courtney Hitchcock opened with a double and Jennifer O'Dell's sacrifice bunt moved her to third. Laura Curtis walked and stole second. Jennifer long hit a single and scored both Curtis and Hitchcock.

Hitchcock was 3-for-4 for the Lady Chargers.

HIXSON 2, MEIGS COUNTY 1: Meigs County took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth on a single and a Hixson error.

In the bottom of the sixth, Ruth Blowe led off with a double for Hixson (18-4) and Porschia Johnson followed with an RBI double.

Whitney Galloway then grounded out to first, advancing Johnson to third. Jenevieve Cena followed with a game-winning RBI sacrifice fly.

Blowe was 3-for-3 for Hixson and Lauren Bray and Brittany Roberts also had doubles.

Dawon Millwood was the winning pitcher, improving to 17-3 on the season. She gave up only two hits, struck out 12 and walked one.

“Meigs played us tough,’’ Tate said. “We left too many on base and we probably took them a little lightly. Thank goodness that Dawon pitched another wonderful game.’’
