Chattanooga Police said a mental health escapee went on a wild driving spree in North Chattanooga around noon Tuesday.

The bizarre incident began at the Joe Johnson mental health facility when David Wilkey became agitated and left the facility on Spring Street.

He walked over to 322 Cherokee Blvd. where he took the keys of a vehicle parked on the lot. Stanley Breeden, owner of the vehicle who is an employee of the business, noticed Wilkey in the car and attempted to stop him.

Wilkey began driving erratically, causing Breeden to fall off of the car. The vehicle owner received minor injuries, but was transported to the hospital for observation.

Wilkey then sped off of the parking lot and careened into three parked vehicles in the area. He ultimately crashed at a nearby construction site, where workers were able to subdue Wilkey until police arrived.

No one else was injured in the incident.

Wilkey was taken into custody and transported to Erlanger Hospital for evaluation.

David Wilkey was arrested Tuesday evening after being treated and released at Erlanger Hospital.

He was charged with especially aggravated robbery and is in Hamilton County Jail with a $75,000 bond.

This case is being investigated by the property crimes division.
