Unum Recognized As A Best Employer For Healthy Lifestyles
posted May 13, 2008

Unum has been honored for its commitment to the health of its employees with a Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles award, the third time Unum has earned the national recognition.

“Finding ways to help employees maintain and improve their health is an important element of Unum’s commitment to the wellness of individuals and their families,” said Linda A. Levesque, Unum’s vice president of Human Resources, Benefits. “We’re pleased that the value of that commitment is recognized.”

The 2008 Gold award comes from the National Business Group on Health, a nonprofit organization of large employers. The award recognized companies for creating cultural and environmental changes that support employees who have made a commitment to healthy behaviors.

Unum, one of the leading providers of employee benefits products and services, offers about 9,000 U.S.-based employees of Unum and Colonial Life a broad range of resources that promote wellness, identify and manage risk, and educate them about the merits of healthy behaviors. Those resources include:
· Health Resource Centers on Unum’s four home office campuses provide health coaching and wellness services. The centers are the major source for education, programs and activities that help support employees’ efforts to maintain and improve their health or manage chronic illness. Nurses at each center provide assistance that includes health screenings and administering flu and allergy shots.

· Healthy food choices at Unum’s cafeterias and in vending machines.

· A partnership with health insurer Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield to provide a Health Management Tool that gives a personalized and confidential report to each employee about their health.

· A comprehensive communications strategy to educate employees on the company’s benefits programs and the importance of exercise and nutrition.

· On-site fitness facilities on four Unum campuses, as well as 24-hour nurse help lines and an employee-assistance program highlighting various health-related topics.

“We are very pleased to honor Unum for their innovation and commitment to providing lifestyle improvement programs designed to encourage healthier lifestyles for their employees,” said Helen Darling, president of the National Business Group on Health.

“Unum and its management team should be proud of both their initiatives and ongoing support of helping employees to choose a healthier way of life.”

Unum was among 52 employers that received the Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles award at the Leadership Summit sponsored by the National Business Group on Health’s Institute on the Costs and Health Effects of Obesity.
