Four Area Prep Tennis Teams Advance To State
posted May 14, 2008

The St. Andrew's-Sewanee girls made school history, while McCallie and GPS remained undefeated and the Baylor girls won on the road in TSSAA Division II quarterfinal tennis action Tuesday.

The St. Andrew's-Sewanee girls' team defeated visiting Southern Baptist Educational Center, 7-0, to advance to the Division II-A semifinals next Tuesday. This is the first time in school history that a SAS team in any sport has competed in the state tournament.

"The girls are real excited about earning a spot in the state tournament," said SAS coach Kelley Black whose team will face the Lausanne-St. George winner in the semifinals.

Sisters Sadie and Avery Shackelford led the way for the Mountain Lions with 6-6, 6-0 singles wins at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively. SAS (9-2) has won six in a row.

McCallie posted a 5-0 win against Baylor at home to improve to 13-0. McCallie has recorded three shutout wins against Baylor in the same season for the first time in school history. The Blue Tornado twice won 9-0 in dual matches earlier this season.

"We are playing as well as we have all season," said McCallie coach Eric Voges, who team advances to the state semis in hopes of a third straight championship.

No.1 player David Henry was the first McCallie player off the court with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Orlando Lourenco. Teammate J.P. McLemore (No. 3) was next to complete his match, followed by Thomas Fanjoy at No. 5 and Chris Schlabach at No. 4 to clinch the match. Wes Nelson made it 5-0 with a win at No. 2 singles.

McCallie has won seven straight matches over a three-year period against its long time rival. The last time McCallie won seven in a row against the Red Raiders was from 1954-1957.

Two-time defending state champ GPS also improved to 13-0 with a 5-0 win against visiting Ensworth in the Division II East/Middle quarterfinal.

Sophomore Sarah Evans played No. 1 singles and posted a 6-0, 6-0 win against Morgan Hertik. Teammates Cady Jones (No. 2) and Meredith Morrow (No. 4) also had 6-0, 6-0 singles wins.

In Memphis, the Baylor girls' (8-5) defeated St. Mary’s, 5-2, to earn a spot in the state final four.

Singles wins for the Red Raiders came from Currant Scruggs (No. 1), Katie Thornton (No. 2) and Erica Marschall (No. 3). The teams of Scruggs-Thornton and Marschall-Kelly Scruggs also won in doubles.
